Gary Strode and Paul Thomas (of the company MXGP, Inc. in Kirkland) have applied to Snohomish County for a Conditional Use Permit to utilize the 58-acre Rinker Materials' site (soon to be acquired by Cemex?) for a motorcross (mx) track. The Snohomish County File Number is 06-102142-LU. The site is located at approximately 19000 Yew Way in Snohomish, WA (ie., the Maltby area).

This website is intended to summarize opposition to the proposal. Many people feel the significant noise and pollution (resulting from the motocross track) are inappropriate for the bucolic Maltby area. I encourage you to review the website. Start by visualizing the Proposed Location, and understanding the risk of Existing Contaminants at the same location. Review the Proposal documents. Learn why the community is saying NO to the proposal. Finally, read how you can help.

NOTE: Some people are having problems accessing the Proposed Location web page if they are using the Internet Explorer (IE) web browser. If you get an Operation cancelled error message then try pressing the F5 button (Refresh) once or twice while still on the Proposed Location web page. If F5 still doesn't help, consider installing the free Firefox web browser.

Updated on Monday, March 31, 2008 at 6:00am (Pacific Time). Please see What's New for changes.

On August 7, 2006 MXGP cancelled the proposal with Snohomish County. A significant zoning issue was identified by a Maltby resident. Resolution of the zoning issue could have taken up to 18 months.

As of June 17, 2007 individuals are pursuing the Granite Falls Motocross Park at a site approximately six miles Northeast of Granite Falls, WA. The proposed location is along the Mountain Loop Highway and may impact the serenity of Mount Pilchuck, the Robe Trail, or the Monte Cristo railroad tunnels. See the What's New page (above) for a link to the permit and a map.

A motocross track has been proposed in Hamilton, WA (East of Burlington along the North Cascades Highway). The community there has established the opposition website www.cahm.info. Please see my June 15 editorial on how the motocross proposal in Hamilton may be indirectly linked to MXGP, Inc.

In addition, two ancillary issues have been identified at the former gravel pit. I discuss these two issues and related concerns in a March 31 editorial.
  • The site is not in compliance with the Reclamation Plan as per the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR). On April 10, 2006 the DNR issued an Order to Rectify Deficiencies to Rinker Materials. Rinker Materials did not appeal the Order, advised the DNR they intend to submit a new Reclamation Plan, and now have until August 8, 2006 to submit all relevant documents to the DNR. Please see my June 21 editorial on this situation. Please look in Research Summaries for several memos between the DNR and Rinker Materials, and the recent memo from the DNR to Snohomish County regarding the DNR's concerns about the MXGP proposal.
  • Contaminated waste was accidentally dumped at the site by Rinker Materials. The waste originated from a City of Seattle facility on the Tolt River, and contained concentrations of the heavy metals Arsenic, Cadmium, and Chromium. The Snohomish Health District is pursuing the issue with Rinker Materials. I strongly encourage you to read the timeline and memos on the Existing Contaminants page, and then read the Test Results page.
